Position Overview:

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer that will report to the Carshell Calculations Engineering Manager. In this role you will be responsible for the structural calculation, and related activities involved in the design, analysis, and manufacture of rail vehicle carbody structures. This is a full-time in-person role located in Sacramento, California.

The primary objective of this role is to support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of rail vehicle carbody structures. This includes performing structural assessments of rail vehicle primary and secondary structure using a combination of manual and Finite Element (FEA) calculation methodologies against static and fatigue loads, crafting conceptual and detailed structural designs for welded and machined structural components, selecting and specifying materials, and supporting manufacturing.

What you will be doing:

  • Be a direct guide to craft packages ensuring all systems are fully coordinated into the vehicles

  • Use 3D CAD software to build models for structural assessment (Finite Element Analysis)

  • Document analytical work in detailed engineering reports demonstrating compliance with regulatory requirements

  • Responsible for compilation of the Specifications, CDRL's, and Design Review Documentation

  • Specify technical requirements and liaise across departments providing clarity as required

  • Act as the technical representative in customer design meetings

  • Have a shown understanding of all aspects of the analytical process from the interpretation of regulatory and specification requirements, load assumptions, and boundary conditions, through results.

  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers in the department

  • Work closely with all internal and external customers

  • Work collaboratively with management to ensure business needs are maintained

  • Own the duration of assigned tasks independently with consideration of both time and associated cost

  • Responsible for ensuring that schedules are met for all work and across all projects

  • Support the procurement, manufacturing, testing, and warranty cycles

  • Some travel required

What you will need to be successful:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering or MS degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering

  • Experience in the design and analysis of welded structures subject to static and cyclic loads

  • Proven understanding of Finite Element analysis as applicable to structural design including static, quasi-static, dynamic, and fatigue assessment methodologies

  • In-depth knowledge of material science and its applicability to structural analysis and welding

  • Qualified applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Rolling Stock Engineering experience and the vehicle platforms they are derived from.

  • Solid understanding of typical railway Light Rail and Heavy Rail design standards such as AAR Section M, APTA, PRIIA, and EN12663

  • Solid understanding of structural welding codes including AWS, EN15085, DVS1608 and 1612

  • PE License, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural

*This job is based in Sacramento, CA. Siemens offers a variety of health and wellness benefits to employees. Details regarding our benefits can be found here: https://www.benefitsquickstart.com/siemens/index.html . The base salary range in Sacramento, CA, is $108,400 - $146,600. The salary may be higher or lower depending on the budget and the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
