We craft and manufacture across the entire spectrum of rolling stock, including commuter and regional passenger trains, light rail and streetcars, metros, locomotives, passenger coaches, and high-speed trainsets. Cities and Railroads also rely on us to provide traction-power substations and electricity transmission, as well as signaling and control technology for freight and passenger rail and transit systems.

The Rail Division has an immediate opening for an Engineering Management position leading the Train Control and Monitoring group within the Electrical Engineering department of the overall Rolling Stock Engineering. The candidate will have responsibility for leading a diverse team of System and Software Engineers in developing the Architecture and software for the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) across all rail vehicle platforms developed in Sacramento (Light Rail, Locomotives, Passenger Coaches) as well as the propulsion system design for Light Rail vehicles.

We are looking for an experienced team player with software development experience guiding a group of initially 5 Engineers and growing the team as the scope for software implementation is encouraged to expand over the coming years.

Responsibilities in this role involve:

  • guiding reporting roles as a software architect in the planning and execution of software development tasks

· lead role for software release process onto vehicles and to the customer sites

· be responsible for the development of the system design required for propulsion, train control, and diagnostics functionality and the outputs generated for the customers

· structure, schedule, and manage associated tasks within the budget constraints of the projects

· set expectations for work outcomes and supervise the progress

· handle resources via interviewing, hiring, promoting, or terminating employees if necessary

· communicate progress and deliverables across the organization

· work optimally with remote teams (in Europe) contributing to software development or propulsion system design

· close collaboration with many interfacing groups such as electrical and mechanical systems and Design Engineering as well as factory testing, commissioning, and field service

· handling expectations to the group from external stakeholders or industry standards against a challenging schedule to safely and reliably put vehicles into service

Desired skills for this role include:

  • good communication and writing skills to efficiently align with the many interface partners and customers

  • experience with software development processes and involved standards (i.e. EN 50657 and IEEE 1558) and how they tie into an overall project execution

  • experience with power electronics (IGBT based) and industrial controllers (PLC) and their selection, configuration, and programming (based on IEC 61131)

  • knowledge of IT product lifecycles, obsolescence management, cybersecurity

  • practical experience in the application of relevant industry standards surrounding Train Control Networks (i.e. IEC 61375) to create compliant and safe designs

  • Experience working with interfaces in a manufacturing and testing environment

Desired education and work experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 3 or more years of relevant work experience

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering with 5 or more years of relevant work experience

  • At least 2 years experience as a functional lead or supervisor of employees incl. e.g. goal setting, scheduling work, and performance monitoring

*This job is based in Sacramento, CA. Siemens offers a variety of health and wellness benefits to employees. The base salary range in Sacramento, CA, is $132,400 - $178,600 with an annual incentive target of 10% of the base salary. The salary may be higher or lower depending on the budget and the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
